Freediving is a Mirror of Your Nervous System


Long before I trained in Brainspotting, I realised that freediving was revealing something far more interesting than breath-hold ability.

In fact, when I first began teaching freediving, I originally wanted to call my school Deep Reflections because I was fascinated by the way diving seemed to reflect our internal state. Practical considerations eventually won, and Freedive Ibiza made far more sense from a search engine perspective, but the original idea has never left me.

Over the years, as an athlete, instructor, competition safety diver, Chief of Safety and now Brainspotting practitioner, that observation has only become stronger.

Freediving is a mirror of the nervous system.

When knowing what to do isn't enough

Almost every freediver has experienced moments that don't seem to make sense.

You understand the importance of relaxation, but you can't find it in you.

Your equalisation suddenly becomes inconsistent despite no change in technique.

You become reactive to contractions that you've comfortably tolerated hundreds of times before.

A difficult dive continues to affect your confidence long after you've rationalised that you're safe. You understand exactly what needs to happen, yet your body seems to have different ideas.

It's tempting to think these are failures of mindset, discipline or technique.

Sometimes they are. But often, they're something else entirely.

Freediving is unlike almost any other activity

Freediving deliberately places us in situations that the brain may interpret as survival-relevant.

Holding our breath, increasing carbon dioxide, descending into depth and experiencing unfamiliar physiological sensations all require the nervous system to distinguish between genuine danger and a situation that is actually safe.

This isn't simply a conscious decision we make - much of this process happens automatically.

Our conscious mind allows us to think, analyse, plan and make decisions. It helps us learn techniques, understand physiology and remember our training.

But the systems responsible for survival operate differently.

They continuously gather information from both our internal and external environment, asking one fundamental question: Am I safe?

If the answer is yes, the nervous system has greater capacity for flexibility, learning, recovery and coordinated movement.

If the answer is uncertain on a subconscious level, survival responses begin to take priority.

These responses are protective rather than logical.

The body informs the brain

One of the most fascinating discoveries in neuroscience is that communication isn't primarily travelling from the brain to the body.

Much of it travels in the opposite direction.

Around 80% of the fibres within the vagus nerve carry information from the body towards the brain. In other words, your brain is constantly receiving information about what's happening within your body and using that information to update its interpretation of safety.

As freedivers, we work with this constantly:

Is my belly relaxed?

Can I soften my shoulders?

What do I notice in my diaphragm?

How much pressure am I applying in my equalising?

Am I genuinely listening to my body, or am I trying to override it?

These questions are examples of Interoception - the ability to perceive and interpret the internal state of the body - which plays a central role in freediving.

Why you can't simply "relax"

One of the most common pieces of advice in freediving is also one of the least helpful when someone is struggling.

"Just relax" - are words you hear too often from inexperienced instructors, as if it is easy to follow that command. As if being told to relax makes it possible.

Relaxation isn't something we can force. 

If the nervous system believes we're unsafe, it will always prioritise survival over conscious intention. The body's survival will always override mental narrative.

No amount of positive affirmations, focus on relaxation, visualisation or determination can simply switch that off.

That doesn't mean these approaches have no value. They can be extremely effective when we're working with conscious attention, learning and preparation.

But if the response is being driven by deeper survival networks, understanding the problem intellectually doesn't necessarily change the response itself.

This is why people often describe feeling frustrated.

"I know I'm safe."

"I know what I should do."

"So why won't my body cooperate?"

Because the body isn't responding to logic.

It's responding to its current perception of safety. And safety doesn't mean "I trust my safety diver / instructor" - that is the conscious logical brain. What is running the show is your deeper brain and nervous system.

Performance is shaped by more than training

What can affect the sense of safety in our nervous system? 

A previous blackout.

Barotrauma (bursting an eardrum, sinus squeeze causing vertigo underwater).

A frightening dive.

Witnessing an accident.

Sometimes it has nothing to do with freediving at all.

Fear of failing or disappointing can be understood in the brain as a survival threat; perceived performance expectations put our nervous system into an activated state; overwhelm, stress or prolonged pressure can all influence how the nervous system responds to situations that feel uncertain.

As these experiences accumulate, the nervous system can become less flexible and more reactive.

Freediving simply provides immediate feedback that makes these patterns evident, whether we want to see them or not.

This is why two divers with identical physical ability can have completely different experiences underwater on any given day.

If understanding the problem isn't always enough to change it, how do we access the deeper processes that are driving it?

This is where Brainspotting comes in

Brainspotting is a brain-body approach that works differently from approaches based primarily on conscious thought or verbal processing.

By using specific eye positions, Brainspotting accesses subcortical networks where emotional experiences, procedural memories and survival responses are stored.

Rather than trying to think our way out of a pattern, it creates the conditions for the brain to process and reorganise those deeper networks through its own innate capacity for neuroplasticity.

For freedivers, this can be valuable when a performance block isn't responding to coaching, technical correction or mindset strategies alone.

It may help process the effects of a difficult dive, reduce persistent fear that doesn't seem rational, support recovery from over-training or burnout, or address patterns that continue to interfere with relaxation or performance despite repeated effort.

Importantly, Brainspotting isn't simply about resolving problems.

Beyond removing blocks: Expansion

One of the aspects I find most exciting about Brainspotting is its ability to strengthen positive neural pathways.

This is called Expansion Brainspotting.

Once we have shifted what may limiting or blocking your performance, Expansion taps into what you want to feel and experience more. It creates new positive neural pathways associated with ease, confidence and optimal performance. It can be a tool to access our flow-state.

Flow-state is those dives where everything feels effortless, it all goes to plan, feels blissful and you want it to last and last. 

Where awareness becomes completely absorbed in the present moment.

Where movement feels efficient, attention is clear and there is little distinction between thinking and doing.

Flow isn't something we can manufacture through willpower. It's actually a neurophysiological state. By encoding those positive experiences through Expansion Brainspotting, we give the nervous system a way to access them again in the future.

A different way of understanding performance

Perhaps the most valuable lesson freediving has taught me is that performance isn't simply about physical ability or mental strength. It's about the relationship between the brain, the body and the nervous system.

Technique matters. But beneath technique lies the nervous system, and that is the true driver of our experience and ability.

For me, freediving has always been the clearest mirror we have of our internal state.
