What Brain Studies Say About Brainspotting?

As interest in trauma-informed therapies grows, more people are asking a reasonable question: what’s actually happening in the brain?
Modalities like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) have been studied for longer, so they come with a larger body of research. By comparison, Brainspotting is newer, and the scientific literature is still emerging.
However, recent brain-based studies using EEG (electroencephalogram) and qEEG (quantitative EEG) are beginning to offer some insight into how Brainspotting may affect the brain and nervous system.
What recent brain studies show:
Two recent EEG/qEEG case studies looked at brain activity before and after a single Brainspotting session. While small in scale, the findings are nonetheless compelling.
Before the session, brain scans showed patterns commonly associated with stress and dysregulation, including:
Elevated fast brainwave activity (linked to anxiety and hypervigilance)
Overactivation across multiple brain regions
Disorganised or inefficient brainwave patterns
These are often seen in individuals experiencing chronic stress, trauma, or emotional overload.
After just one Brainspotting session, the scans showed noticeable shifts:
Reduced overall brain overactivation
Decreased stress-related fast brainwaves
More balanced activity between brain regions
Improved organisation and efficiency in brain patterns
In simple terms, the brain appeared to move from a high-alert, overloaded state towards a more regulated and stable state.
What this may mean:
Brainspotting is thought to work by accessing deeper, non-verbal parts of the brain involved in emotional processing — particularly subcortical and limbic systems.
The observed changes in these studies suggest:
Reduced nervous system arousal

What can we take from this?
Brain scans do not directly measure thoughts, feelings, or personal experience. As the researchers themselves note, it is difficult to assign precise psychological meaning to specific brainwave patterns.
These studies also measure immediate, short-term changes after a session. They do not show whether these changes last over time.
At the same time, the findings are difficult to dismiss. They demonstrate that:
Emotional processing can produce measurable changes in brain function
These changes can occur quickly
The brain and nervous system are actively involved in therapeutic change
Brainspotting and EMDR: research vs experience
While these two modalities share some themes, they are different in significant ways. Nonetheless, because EMDR has been around longer, more people have heard of it, and it has a larger evidence base in academic research.
However, in clinical practice, many therapists trained in both approaches report that they increasingly lean towards Brainspotting. This is largely based on:
Client response
Depth of processing
The ability to access non-verbal, body-based material
In other words, while EMDR currently has more published studies, Brainspotting is gaining traction through consistent real-world outcomes.
The role of lived experience (or anecdotal evidence).
Not everything that matters can be easily measured.
Therapeutic change involves subjective experience — how someone feels, functions, and relates to themselves and others. While brain imaging offers valuable insight, it cannot fully capture this.
Client testimonials, practitioner observations, and lived experience remain an important part of understanding effectiveness — particularly in emerging approaches.
